Helping the Summit Community Center Expand

The City of Summit’s Department of Community Programs has served generations of Summit, NJ residents from the original Community Center since 1954.  The facility and staff of the Community Center coordinate over 50 different programs that serve nearly 1,500 residents per week.  Due to the growing popularity of these programs, the city faced an increasing need to undergo a complete renovation and expansion of the recreational facilities.

After several years of working to secure support and funding, the Department of Community Programs fundraising team was able to raise $6.5 million to finance this project.  The fundraising effort was launched with a $250,000 grant from Investors Bank and the Investors Foundation.  In addition, the Celgene Corporation, located right next door to the Center, pledged $300,000 for the new Celgene Senior Lounge.  Support was also received from the Union County Board of Freeholders, the Summit Area Public Foundation, and many other local organizations, businesses and residents.

Construction on the new Community Center began this past September and a groundbreaking ceremony was held that featured Investors Bank CEO Kevin Cummings and local dignitaries.  The center is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.  Improvements to the existing 8,000 square foot building will proceed with a focus on energy efficiency and will include an 11,600 square foot addition.  When completed, the 23,600 square foot facility will be able to accommodate a broader range of programs and activities for Hilltoppers (nickname for Summit residents).  The new Center will include: the Investors Bank Gym, the Celgene Senior Lounge, enhanced meeting spaces, an area for teens, kitchen space, additional restrooms, expanded parking and accessibility improvements.

Investors Bank has a branch in Summit which is located in the city’s downtown area at 393 Springfield Avenue.
