In one form or another, many of us have experienced identity theft. You can be proactive and help protect your personal information by following these simple guidelines.
Do not give out personal or financial information to unknown parties
Never provide confidential information such as your Social Security Number and account numbers over the phone, online or through the mail unless you initiated the contact. Never send sensitive information via email or text message.
Do not carry your Social Security card with you
Instead, store it in a secure place.
Report lost or stolen checks immediately
Investors Bank will block payment on those checks. Be sure to store your new and cancelled checks in a safe place. Don’t pre-print your driver’s license, phone or Social Security Number on your checks.
Report lost or stolen debit, ATM, or credit cards immediately
Investors Bank will cancel the card and send you a new card with a new account number.
Shred unnecessary documents that contain sensitive information
This includes financial offers received in the mail, credit and debit card receipts, bank statements and cancelled checks, expired and unused credit cards, and insurance forms. Go Paperless with Investors Bank e-Statements and Investors Bank Bill Pay.
Monitor and review all bills and statements
If you don’t receive a monthly bill or statement, contact the company to find out why. Immediately investigate any questionable items on your bills or bank statements.
Place outgoing mail only in official Postal Service Collection boxes
Promptly remove mail from your own mailbox. When you are away and cannot pick up your mail, contact your local post office to request that they hold it until you return.
Shop online safely
Avoid posting personal information on Social Media channels
Thieves can use this information such as your mother’s maiden name, birthdays, address, etc. to figure out answers to your security questions. Set up privacy options to prevent access to your personal information.
Create unique passwords, usernames and PINs and keep them private
Avoid commonly used words or public information. Change passwords regularly and don’t use the “remember password” function on your browser. Don’t store passwords or PINs in an obvious place and shield keypads when entering a PIN.
Protect your computer, mobile devices and ensure your internet connection is safe
Keep your computer, mobile devices and security software up-to-date. Download mobile apps from reputable sources. Protect your home wireless network with a password and don’t send sensitive information over unsecure public Wi-Fi connections.
Monitor your financial accounts frequently to ensure there are no unauthorized transactions

Check your credit report at least annually
You are entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. Cyber-security experts advise that you get a free report from a different agency every four months. Doing so will allow you to monitor your personal online security all year long. To order your free credit report, go to the only authorized source or call 1-877-322-8228.
If you believe your identity has been compromised, take these steps as soon as possible
- Contact Investors Bank’s Fraud Hotline at 855-422-6548
- Call the fraud hotlines at other financial institutions where you have accounts
- Contact the credit bureaus listed below and request that they put a fraud alert on your credit report:
- Equifax: 800.525.6285
- Experian: 888.397.3742
- TransUnion: 800.680.7289
- File a complaint with the FTC: This can be done online at FTCComplaintAssistant.gov. Print out a copy for your records. You can also contact the Identity Theft Hotline at 877.ID.Theft (877.438.4338).
- Contact your local police
- Change all of your passwords
